PMFBI, but my recollection of the workings of IDE devices is that the
slave device on any one channel uses the controller electronics of the
master peripheral.  Also, the mobo IDE chip is a rather dumb
interface, so the controller smarts are in the electroncs of the
peripheral.

All that implies that you need a master on each IDE channel.
