What happened was really quite simple. I inserted a Debian disc, boot,
configure, select packages, reboot, wait. Apt does its thing quite
happily, dpkg installs everything - until it comes time to upgrade
itself. I tried getting the deb file from numerous locations, and they
were all identical. Dpkg-deb was able to get info out of the package
just fine, but it like to hosed the machine something fierce for a very
long time.

I am using synaptic now that the machine is up - but this issue was
actually preventing me from getting X installed and running, I had to
roll back to stable in order to get things going. Took me about an hour
before I realized that this was an option. I'm back up to testing... and
am afraid to try again for a few days :P
