Interesting!  I've upgraded packages while their programs were running 
hundreds of times.  The only time I get a temporary glitch is when I 
upgrade kdm from an xterm since the install wants to restart kdm.

I just installed stable on an old ThinkPad.  I think I added unstable to 
my sources.list before installing X.  The system is now mostly 
"unstable" with no glitches.
