What happened?  I have been using the most current version of dpkg (I 
update frequently) for a long time without anything I can blame on dpkg 
having happened.  Do you use a front end like aptitude or synaptic?

I had a problem the other day *only* because Knoppix had broken a 
package.  I blew it away and installed regular Debian and everything is 
fine now.
