A word of caution when buying $40 "gigabit" switches. I have burnt out
no less than 6 of them (it was not my purchasing decision). You get
what you pay for, a device that can negotiate to gigabit speeds but
can't necessarily sustain it without suffering permanent damage ;)
I'd recommend either splurging for a slightly pricier model or
sticking with 100base since you might not actually need gigabit speeds
in this case. With cheap consumer networking hardware, I have always
had better luck with devices in metal chasis over comparably priced
plastic.
