Seriously, an 8-port gig switch costs <$50 these days.  Most likely it
would pay for itself with the power savings alone going from older
equipment, nevermind the productivity boost.

This entire setup sounds pennywise/pound foolish to me - I'd seriously
have the "You'd lose X amount of money being down for Y days, so what
percent of X are you willing to spend to reduce Y?" talk with them.
