I don't have a lap top so I've not looked at setting options for them
but I'll make some guesses. The Power monitoring algorithm may have
been trying to figure out the capacity of the battery, some times it
changes as it ages (like my beer capacity), or it may simply have no
idea after OS install. I think the smart battery's have data wires to
report capacity and have some nifty tricks to include age, and power
status (fuel in the tank).
