[Tfug] no sound on new Ubuntu system

I can't be certain, but I can make a guess as to your situation.  Based on the
"HDA" I'm guessing that you have an Intel "High Definition Audio" chipset.
That's really just a marketing name... there's not much special about it.  My
laptop also has one.

After following the alsa list for a while I've seen *lots* of questions about
this chipset.  Support is very immature partly due to the fact that there are
tons of variations of it and poor documentation.

If this is indeed what you have I think your best bet is to ask some questions
on the alsa-user mailing list.  But, as you are new to Linux this may be
difficult as the solution is probably not going to be straightforward.

As for your other question about modprobe.  The command you issued didn't work
because there is no "snd-" module.  That is just the prefix for all of the
ALSA modules.  For example, I believe the Intel HDA module is "snd-hda-intel".
