This caught my eye and I don't know if you described the disto but:
if you are using a debian based distro for example /var actually
var/cache/apt MAY contain every *.deb you have used to update and you
may need to change settings as afar as how long to keep them cached
there may be other programs caching there (/var) that you don't need the
to also
Likewise debian based and others have virtually all your programs
in /usr so if you have unneeded programs it can get huge,
