[Tfug] Just starting - need help

QNX --  :-)
I worked with that way back when -- It was great --- I was trying to get
that for this project --but bosses like cheap :-(
The devices we make need some degree of real-timedness. XP worked
sufficiently fast, with a 1gig processor, so we figured we could live with
Linux on a small card.
The problem with winders is the forced upgrades to bigger and faster
processors means upgrading devices we build..... calling home... XP embedded
is a fallback.

But have you looked at what *type* of performance
you need?  Are you just looking for a user-interface
that "feels" responsive?  Do you have real-time
constraints to address (HRT vs. SRT)?  Or, do you
have hardware assist for those tyes of issues?

Xlib isn't for the feint of heart.

You should take a look at Inferno.  I think you will
find it a lot less troublesome than Linux + X + ...
You can probably hack together a dog-and-pony really
quickly and decide if it "fits" before investing a
lot of time in another solution.

If you are wed to Linux for some reason, you can also
look at Jaluna-2.  You can also get some real-time
hooks with this approach (as long as you don't move
RT tasks to the Linux userland).

If you have deeper pockets, QNX is also a great
platform (I think Inferno & Jaluna licenses are
much less expensive -- Jaluna-1 is "free").

(I design embedded systems... "Been there, done that,
got the T-shirt to prove it!"  :> )
