Found the problem - as a result of the killed update, there were two
versions of the two X11 packages yum complains about "installed" on my system:
...
xorg-x11.i386 6.8.2-1.FC3.45.2 installed
xorg-x11-Mesa-libGL.i386 6.8.2-1.FC3.45.2 installed
xorg-x11-Mesa-libGLU.i386 6.8.2-1.FC3.45.2 installed
xorg-x11-deprecated-libs.i386 6.8.2-1.FC3.45.2 installed
xorg-x11-deprecated-libs-devel.i386 6.8.2-1.FC3.45.2 installed
xorg-x11-deprecated-libs-devel.i386 6.8.2-1.FC3.45.3.legac installed
xorg-x11-devel.i386 6.8.2-1.FC3.45.2 installed
xorg-x11-font-utils.i386 6.8.2-1.FC3.45.2 installed
xorg-x11-libs.i386 6.8.2-1.FC3.45.2 installed
xorg-x11-libs.i386 6.8.2-1.FC3.45.3.legac installed
xorg-x11-tools.i386 6.8.2-1.FC3.45.2 installed
xorg-x11-twm.i386 6.8.2-1.FC3.45.2 installed
xorg-x11-xauth.i386 6.8.2-1.FC3.45.2 installed
xorg-x11-xfs.i386 6.8.2-1.FC3.45.2 installed
...
I used "yum remove" to get rid of the two legacy package versions and reran
the update process. Update ran fine, and everything is OK now.
(User-friendly error handling???? Who needs that?) Admittedly, killing
yum in mid-update was brain dead, but mistakes like that happen, and I
would have liked a bit clearer help from yum after-the-fact when I was
trying to figure out what was wrong. A simple "Hey, dummy, there are two
versions of these packages installed" would have helped a lot.
