if you do decide to try xorg and xfree works for you, reconsider carefully.

basically you can't downgrade x.  and if your graphics card is
unsupported on xorg but was supported on xfree, you're in for a lot of
unpleasantness.

possibly resulting, if your backups are not perfect in *every* little
detail, and *possibly even if they are fhs-compliant*, in being forced
to reinstall your os from scratch.

not that i've ever done *that*, oh no.

so, um, anybody want a matrox g550?  i'll trade for a video card that
has good open source linux drivers for its dvi output, and sweeten the
deal if necessary.
