You have to remember that USB 1.1 is only 12Mbit/sec.  The FSCK will
read over the entire disk several, even if it's not a full read of every
sector, it's still going to be a heck of a lot

A full read on that drive should be of the order of 45 Hours for USB 1.1
on a 250GB hard disk drive.

250*1000*8/12/60/60

If you are on USB 2, your limited to your HD data rate, probably around
15-25Mbyte/sec

Let's use 20 for the math

250*1000/20/60/60

Or about 3.5 hours
