Hmmm... Yah, the service 'manual' is pretty lacking. The inverter should 
either be at the top of the base unit, or in the LCD, but the manual doesn;t 
show it. The breakout assembly does show 2 of what appear to be standoffs on 
the backside of the LCD assembly and possibly enough space for it there. So 
it may be in the LCD assembly...

It should be recognizable, board with a couple things on it, a copper coil, 
wrapped in Kapton (yellowish-brown insulating film) and 2 heavy insulated 
wires going to the LCD, typically 1 white and 1 pink wire (the high voltage 
power for the backlight).. unless things have changed drastically...

OK, definately looks to be integrated into the LCD assembelly. Remember, 
Google is your friend... "inspiron 8100 inverter", first result is on 
DSLReports for you same problem... half way down the page is a picture on the 
inverter and LCD (note the pink/white wires).

There are a couple threads in the Dell forums on 8100 backlight/inverter 
problems, nothing I see thats immediately helpful.
