Interesting thread!
I said I was going to never going to migrate to WinXP, as Win2K is the
best version of Windows available. But Adobe made me revise this rule,
because their newer programs work only in XP. :(
As far as Windows laptops vs. Linux Laptops, on my last laptop (Acer
Travelmate C110 tablet pc) I ran XP Tablet PC edition ( Pro with extra
tablet functions) and Mandrake 10. Windows was much more memory hungry
than linux. I would run Dreamweaver under Wine and my java-based text
editor, two memory intensive apps plus mail, web, instant messenger,
etc. In my mind I'd be thinking 'oh, great, I gotta switch apps, time to
wait as it swaps to drive' but it would *never* happen in Linux. But
naturally I was conditioned to wait for it under windows :P
This is with 256MB of ram. XP seems to run much better on 512MB of ram,
and this problem (generally) goes away. 512 is becoming more standard on
laptops. On the newer acers you can actually upgrade to 2gb...on a laptop!
Also, Cringeley is a sensationalist freak! Intel merging with Apple?
Yeah, right. I'm sure the fact that their prototype G5 laptops were
frying eggs and required nuclear power had nothing to do with it.
