  Opterons (and UltraSparcs, and POWER systems) have much better IO busses
attached to them usually than your run-of-the-mill $30 motherboard jobies. 
But as you already mentioned that you don't need >2G files you probably
don't care about 50+MB/s over the network, so your nearest pocket calculator
will do just as well.
