Actually, while it may not be the educational system's "Right Way" to
learn C (or any programming skills whatsoever)... I always personally
recommend finding a friendly Open-Source/Free-Software project or group
and help out there.
I personally have never taken /any/ programming classes to learn how to
program (I took 'Pascal' once in the '80s at a school to try and prevent
them from cancelling it [it didn't work] and one Java class here at the U
of A just because I wanted an easy 'A' for my GPA) and can attest that you
can pick up any programming language with a little bit of hard work and
drive.
In fact, over at Tux4Kids(.org/.net) a few of our most useful developers
came to us with no programming skills whatsoever and picked up enough to
become very good assets.
Now before anyone grouses about this: Yes, I'm aware this is a 'baptismal
by fire' and not for everyone... but methods like this have churned out
some of the best programmers I know ;-)
If you want any good suggestions for friendly projects with a minimal of
entry skills(_not_ mplayer), feel free to contact me off list.
