Can anyone point me to a reference or doc that states specifically what 
(non-alphanumerical) characters can be used in a Linux system (root or 
user) password?

If this varies based on shell or distribution, can you point to any 
documentation that outlines what specifically will work under an 
installation of Linux Mandrake 8.2 running BASH?
