For any of you who are curious, the procedure that finally worked to 
turn my 486 into an x terminal displaying a login screen for my athlon 
went something like this:

On the Athlon:
   Make sure gdm is running and that xdmcp is enabled in gdm.conf.
   I added gdm to my /etc/hosts.allow, but don't know whether or not I 
needed to do that.

On the 486:
   In stead of running a login manager, make the default runlevel 
respawn the command: /usr/bin/X11/X -broadcast.

And that's it. The 486's display flickers a bit before my normal login 
screen comes up asking for a login on the server. If I wanted to, I 
could probably tell it to look for a specific host and could play with 
ports and stuff, but that's not a concern right now. The url that
