For some reason I am not finding an option in the gdm.conf to specifify a
system that an XDMCP connect comes from, for default login behavior

Basically, all users of a GDM server/manager can auto login, or they
can't.

What you might be able to do is install GDM on the 486 itself, and have a
session that creates the remote Xwindows connection.  They you would have
an individual gdm.conf for that system, and could specify the auto login
on it.
