As far as I know, the 678 doesn't have an overheating problem, unless you
cover it up. It does get hot, but the CPU would be the first to go, not the
ethernet chip. I have had problems occasionally with mine though. The pins in
the ethernet jack tend to get bent up so they no longer contact the cable
pins.
Also, what does the output/logging on the 678 say? "show int eth0" "show log".
