Actually, it turned out to be a far simpler (and more embarrassing)
solution.
I hadn't set the path SUID to the group in question (/usr2/lab was not
SUID to lab). So it was an underlying OS problem and had nothing to do
with samba.
So, I was basically making my problem a lot more compicated than it
needed to be ;-)
