The original 802.11b Airport card in an iMac begs to differ - it
supports WPA just fine, with Mac OS X 10.3 or later.

WPA support is much more card and OS dependent, not standard
dependent.   The card has to understand the encryption, and the OS has
to have a "supplicant" that handles key exchange, IIRC.
