If you search freshmeat.net for hotmail, you can find projects like
gotmail, hotwayd, or freepops which seem to do what you want.  I don't
use my hotmail account (it frequently gets disabled for non-use) so I
haven't bothered to research it further.  I do know that Outlook Express
has the ability to check Hotmail, but that's unlikely to be useful to
subscribers of this list :)
