I have had problems with the gpm messing with X before, and so now I
configure gpm to use the "R" switch, and have my X config read gpmdata
instead of the raw device.

If console mouse is of any use to you, you could try that.  It did take
me a little messing around with the "R" switch (see the "t" switch help
for a list of devices you can use to relay as (asterisks)), and the X
config to get it to work though.
