ok, a followup so that others with the same problem can search
for it.  my next message is to adrian privately.
i took apart the display assembly.  it went very well, although
i left minor scratches because i don't have a "plastic scribe".
i removed the card in the lowerish leftish centerish part of this picture:

i don't know how to remove the metal plate covering the card, so i can't
check for a hairline crack, but the cables look ok to me.  which might
not mean much :-).
i reinserted the cables and started it up partly disassembled.
same as before: works perfectly, then the video goes completely
dim all of a sudden a few minutes later.

i actually read that entire thread before posting, with a text browser.  for
some reason the caption ("here's teh back") didn't jump out at me as
being relevant to the inverter's location, at the time. :-)
