Maybe you need some mid-afternoon coffee. :) Erich did specify the 4th
partition of sda.

Can't say for sure... I doubt it's an age/incompatibility problem. Maybe
the disk is bad?
You could try fsck and tell it what FS type specifically to use. This is
the same error I was getting with my Android-eaten SD card. The data was
more or less intact as I could recover most image files using magicrescue,
but the FS structure/superblock was damaged beyond use.
