Hi,
Obviously OT but I've been casting around looking for
suggestions/opinions/experiences of various folks wrt
new TV purchases.
We watch very little TV -- primarily DVD's. Broadcast
(not cable) consumption is typically stuff like PBS.
On average ("TV"), about an hour a day (though much
more when you take into account DVD's).
Our 12? year old plasma is starting to show signs of
age. Not sure if I want to spend the time keeping it
running when next it fails.
And, of course, being that old, it requires a converter
box for OTA broadcasts (those are notoriously unreliable...
I've probably fixed 4 or 5 in the years since DTV settled
upon us).
The only real draw of the larger screen is that it makes subtitles
*so* much easier to read (than on a more traditionally sized set).
And, since we aren't couch potatoes, there's no interest in these
massive screens that monopolize the room!
[I had the opportunity to purchase a motorized projection screen
some years back and failed to avail myself of it. It would have
been the most practical solution as I could have recessed it
into the ceiling so it had *no* presence in the room when not
in use! <frown> 20/20 hindsight...]
So, what do folks see as best bang for the buck? Experiences of
neighbors seem to indicate a rather high failure rate -- often
"just out of warranty".
Vendors to avoid? (I'm sure specific model numbers are insignificant
as I imagine they change annually!) Vendors folks have been happy
with?
All else being equal, Costco seems to have a slight edge over,
e.g., Sam's Club -- at least in terms of the standard warranty.
OTOH, their offering of the *extended* warranty leaves me wondering
if this is just a typical "money grab" -- or, possibly, desireable!
Of course, another option is to just rescue a (more current!) "broken"
TV from friends/associates and invest the time to get it running again.
Thoughts?
Thanks!
