Ian and JD are correct in pointing to udev.
Brother uses proprietary drivers for their products, which are
available for download at
http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/index.html
Installation instructions are also available on the same page.
Instructions for configuring the scanner so that normal users can
