Hmmm...  Given the complexity of X, I would think it the more likely
culprit.  I can't think of anything lightdm/gdm might be doing that
could cause this (other than log file leakage of some sort).

Also, such a strange and bizarre bug is very unlikely to be duplicated
in two very different login managers.  But, they do both spawn X
server processes...
