As Paul mentioned, these are usually just serial control connections -
usually they take a single letter or short sequences of letters and do
things like change channels, inputs, volume, etc.
I'd look for a service manual for the device or similar devices from
the same brand, which might have a command list and other required
settings (baud rate, etc.)
