[Tfug] best router for novel uses - long distance bridging, mesh, etc.

Anyone have thoughts on a router one can flash readily and do
community networking and maybe set up a mesh in mobile locations (i.e.
hamfest, conference, park, etc.) and such on? I've got some ubiquity
stuff, and I'm not exactly enamoured of the way openwrt is running on
it, but maybe it's just learning curve...

Personal use, so ideally it would be dirt-cheap and I can stockpile a
few of them, but I'll take robustness & a straight-forward setup
first.
