I have only done Android development, and I would say, yes, an emulator
is the way to go to start. Much easier, and no worry about messing up a
phone you use daily.

Ironically, I did Android development  on my Macbook Pro. I say
ironically, since I *think* iphone development requires you to use a Mac
for the IDE.

Also, I believe you have to pay for the developer's key if you want to
publish your iphone app.

Also Liz, if you end up getting interested in Android dev,  I have an
extra inexpensive Android phone you could probably buy off me. (Its a
Virgin Mobile Optimus V)  It has the advantage that you don't need to
have a service plan.  And if you want to try it out as a phone, you can
turn on a cheap plan for only one month.

I got it because my Mobile dev class required some programming for
sensors which is hard w/o a real phone. Some things, eg. proximity
sensor, etc are hard to test w/o real phone.
