Hi Liz,
You're going to get a lot of polarized responses to that question
on this list.
You can run your mobile apps inside a "mobile device emulator"
directly on your computer. This means you don't need to have the
device to get started.
So my recommendation is to download the software development kits
for the phones you are considering, and play around with them,
maybe make a super simple app, and see which one you like better.
