I don't know the math, but my general rule for coverage is one access point
every 100 feet for 802.11g and slightly further for N on 2.4ghz. Avoid
bathrooms and kitchens - especially microwaves (a big microwave can knock
out wifi for an entire building). If your devices have external antennas,
you can usually upgrade them fairly inexpensively. Additionally, If you
make sure your firmware supports dd-wrt, you can fiddle with the
transmission strength to some extent.
Beware that unless you are in complete isolation, you will inevitably be
overlapping signal radius with your neighbors. If you're operating on the
junk band, there are only three channels. Overmuch aggression with your
transmission strength is impolite to those you'll be drowning out.
Half a decade ago, my father knocked out all wifi on his end of campus when
he added a behemoth of an antenna to the wireless AP in his lab ;)
