Just a heads-up...
Got a weird problem recently where my lappy wouldn't boot. It would get to
the point where I'd normally see a login screen, show a mouse cursor (that
worked), but on an otherwise black background. Couldn't login at all.
Got into a recovery console, realized that unlike previous versions it had
actually turned on WiFi and I was online, I did a "sudo apt-get install
kubuntu-desktop" and then a "sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm" and switched from
GDM (Gnome Display Manager) to KDM, which has worked fine since.
I usually pay attention to what updates are coming in and I don't think any
affected GDM? I am however on xorg-edgers so it's possible a funky display
driver croaked with the new "graphical boot" stuff?
Anyways...swapping boot display managers and login controllers fixed it
right up and yes, I can still get into Gnome via KDM...
Found it way cool that the WiFi stuff works automagically in pure console
mode now...damned handy, otherwise I would have had to go to my landlady's
place and jack into her Ethernet...
