I'm very interested in this thread,

                  I tried to upgrade to a newer version of xorg-server, 
and discovered to
my dismay that the scan rate/color depth was reduced to the lowest common
denominator, and there was no (easy) way to "peak and tweak" like I was
able to do with earlier versions.
 
                  It's hard to say at what version this occurred because 
each distro
has it's own version nomenclature. I can only make vague comments at this
point, but this all started when the xorg community began to work with
the HAL/udev systems that run on the newer kernels. "Your problems
are over" they said, "the xorg-server takes care of everything for you"
