Thanks Brandon, Don, and Paul,

I tried each of your suggestions and apparently the problem is solved. 
For some reason a couple of libraries got corrupted but what they related
to I'm still not sure.

I did a system remaster before I tried anything so at least I could return
to the previous state.  Remastersys seems to work quite well as a back-up.
