[Tfug] Bizarre permissions situation...

I have the same player, and I really like it, but I haven't used the
standard OS in forever. Presently running the latest Rockbox on it - gives
me all the .ogg support and what-not.

I haven't tried using the command line with it, but regular Nautilus
sessions allow me to do anything I want for copying/deleting files and so
on.

Have you installed Rockbox on it? The graphical installation tool is very
easy, and works well.
