OK,
Here are the statistics:
kernel bzImage size
Comments Cost of hardware
------ ------------
--------- ----------------
2.6.24-r8 2724400 Fully integrated.
Does $40
its day-to-day duties
including running this
e-mail editor. A DHCP
server, X server, and
print server
2.6.25-r9 2782172 Fully integrated. Runs
free
as an X-host for other
systems. Performs multi-
media tasks: watching
movies. Watching YouTube.
Editing & producing video
clips.
2.6.31-r6 4320192 Having difficulty
integrating. $350
kernel has been installed
on a 60G IDE drive
that boots
up in some machines,
but not
in others, (including the
target machine) Has been
installed and boots in
another
machine however this
machine
has an AGP card with
an r128
chip. Xorg-server dies
because
a kernel feature,
MTRR, is being
deprecated.
I've heard it said that the kernel developers no longer want to
support old
hardware, but this machine I'm working on is brand new, and is becoming a
headache to integrate. The kernel is becoming a horrendously complicated
monstrosity that has mixed success working on the average joe's machine.
I subscribe to another listserv and someone there has thrown their arms
in despair about installing a late version of FC with , you guessed it,
the 2.6.31 kernel.
I hate ts say it but this means that Micro$oft will win.
Erich
