If I remember correctly , Fdisk should let you delete all the partitions.
Alternatively you could use one of the manufacturer's utilities. Do you know
what brand the drive is?

You may want to delete ALL the existing partitions and let the install set
them up.

It's good advice, but I'm so flippin frustrated with windows and the slow
strange behavior of the laptop I'm willing to throw the whole machine away
if this doesn't work.

Liz,

I would strongly recommend that you not simply wipe out your Windows
install and, instead, run from a live cd, set up a dual-boot system,
or run from within a virtual machine.  Once you're comfortable with
the new system, then you can complete your migration.
