Well...I've been using NM with so far three different Verizon cellmodem devices.

Under Karmic there's this neat pop-up the first time it detects your
cellmodem, asking which carrier you're on and if necessary, any
additional setup details that some carriers require.  Most don't.  If
you use a cellmodem in Linux with shell scripts (PPP) you have to
include a "username" and "password" but they're not actually used on
most systems; your real "personal authentication" comes from the phone
number hardwired into the cellmodem device.

I'm pretty sure that's how Cricket works, I checked them out once as a
possible cheaper alternative.

Upshot: any distro with NM8 in it is going to be by far the best for cellmodems.
