Unfortunately, when all you have is a sledge hammer, you've got to use
the sledge hammer or do without the walnut.  If you're willing to go
the non-free route, MS's PowerPoint Viewer works under Wine.  (Though
installing Wine seems even heavier than OOo.)  In Debian, it's been
repackaged as pptview.
