I was finally reading some of the examples in Ubuntu 8.04. Included is a
file called oo-maxwell.odt which lists Maxwell's equations for 'life, the
universe, and everything.' 8.04 shipped with OpenOffice 2.4 I think. In
a foot note to the page, the recommendation was for more complex equations
use Lyx. I used Lyx (not for equations) and it is a great interface
which, from what I understand, was originally designed for scientific and
mathematical work.
