I use a Debian 5.03 kernel. I

I purchased an HP 6500 Wireless Printer; not as interested in the wireless part as I am the price I paid a Costco, so I would like to keep it, but the automatic HPLIP configuration from the tarball I downloaded is not error free; but is the recommended  HPLIP version, and indeed contains the .ppd.

Perhaps the USB is not being found, though lsusb sees it, and though I manually enter the address, see no response from HPLIP.

Apparently, there are many configuration options with respect to dynamic/static .ppd installs, etc.

Is it certain that if the automatic HPLIP can't select the proper options that no proper options exist- because perhaps it had tried every possible combination of all possible options (and I should find another printer for my desktop), or should I try to work this out because there is a reasonable chance, greater than 5%, I can get the printer to work perfectly, even wirelessly, because the problem is perhaps more basic than available options and as easy to resolve, with say a mouse-click.

In other words, does the failure of the automatic installation process indicate a possibility of less than 5%, a human person of average reading level and computer skills, can decipher the cause of the failure and make the necessary correction?
