I seem to recall that the USB2->VGA adapters do NOT support full frame
rate, ie they will not do well with playing video files, etc.

They were meant for things like a powerpoint/impress presentation, etc

Not to say it would not work for extra realestate, I seem to recall the
SIS chipset is supported by the kernel,  don't remember on others.

You may have better luck with this guy from Matrox that is built for
this, going rather cheap on ebay:
