You're correct Claude. That's where I'm coming from. Unless I have a
real application, I don't waste time learning a technology just for the
sake of the technology - well... I'm actually trying to get in to
electronics and just ordered an Arduino that encourages free-form play.
Which will be a challenge for me.

Respectfully,
Liz, Data Base Administrator,

Not answering your question but, rather, an observation:

Some people have an insatiable curiosity to learn about new
technologies, philosophical theories, etc. And that's fine. But if
you're asking "Is it worthwhile to learn this particular technology?,"
I suspect that you don't fall into that category.

I don't either. Basically, I don't learn anything that isn't
satisfying a particular need that I have. And, so, I've amassed a an
eclectic toolkit of languages and technologies that serve my own
needs. Some are essentially obsolete (RCS, for example) but that's
fine as it serves my own needs.

If, like me, you're not driven to learn new technologies then what you
need to do is examine what your needs are--find out where you're
repeating yourself, wasting time, not being as efficient as you could
be--and then figure out ways to address that.

But then your question again won't be "Is it worthwhile to learn this
technology?" but, rather, "I find myself doing X, Y, and Z over and
over again through the course of a day. I'm wondering if there's a
way to automate/avoid that? I've looked at technologies A, B, and C
and they don't seem to quite do what I'm trying to accomplish. Any
thoughts?"

Claude
