The desktop is the normal Ubuntu desktop.  The cursor moves fine.  When I
attempt to open menus I get nothing.  Right clicking gives me nothing. 
Holding the cursor on any of the menu buttons doesn't display the little
yellow box with the descriptions.

I can get to tty1 and shutdown.

Rebooting into normal user mode gives me the same scrambled desktop as
before.
