To be fair, the discipline of that sort of environment
can be a win as it can let you support multiple "clients"
simultaneously whereas hardwiring your application to a
hardware platform has a sinister influence on what features
of that environment you will exploit (e.g., silly
applications that assume 80x25 text displays just because
MS's "console" was that size -- instead of being more
versatile in supporting *any* size).

But, I thik it really only makes sense for trivial applications.
