"No longer necessary" != "Not respected".  Yes, X is being
reconfigured so as to automagically configure itself, but it will
still respect any xorg.conf file that exists/you supply.

I was as frustrated as anybody when I heard that X was being made to
depend on hal.  But
http://wiki.debian.org/XStrikeForce/InputHotplugGuide has a really
good and straightforward discussion about why this decision was made
and I'm now convinced that it is the correct approach.  It does mean
that those of us familiar with X will need to learn a new way of
configuring it--and the input/output system in general (e.g., mouse,
keyboards, displays, etc) but such transitions are always painful.
This is one that I think is definitely a step forward--even though I'm
sure to be cursing it myself at first.
